How we decorate our home for Christmas as minimalists

Since my husband and I became minimalists, we decluttered our Christmas a lot!

We got rid of everything from unused joyless decor to gifts we received yet never used, all the way to Christmas shopping habits that weren’t serving us well.

And today, I want to focus on the material portion of Christmas and share how we decorate our home for Christmas as minimalists.

LET’S START WITH OUR CHRISTMAS TREE

We used to own three Christmas trees that we proudly displayed in our living room, bedroom and office area. Of course, they weren’t all big traditional trees; the office tree was tiny, and we had a medium one for the bedroom.

But since decluttering, we decided to donate all of our trees and buy only one that would be perfect for all our needs.

Since I was a young kid, I’ve always dreamt of having a stylish Xmas tree. As a fashionista, I love chic things everywhere – not just in my closet. And the Christmas tree is no exception.

So when we moved back home to Slovenia, we finally splurged on the big, gorgeous, customisable Christmas tree that we can take with us even if we move to a new home.

And if you’re wondering what I mean when I say “customisable”? Our tree has removable branches, which means you can create any shape you want; you can squeeze it into a corner or next to the wall – whatever your heart desires.

When it comes to our decor, we chose lovely gold, pink and white baubles that look very stylish with our warm white lights.

We’re thrilled with how our tree looks, and for the last three years, it has stayed exactly the same without triggering the need to buy anything extra.

OTHER CHRISTMAS DECOR

As for other festive decorations, we only decided to keep our personalised socks. We had them made to order more than seven years ago, and we still love hanging them up because they make the whole living room a lot more cheerful.

These are not as stylish as our Xmas tree, but they are very Christmasy, and we love them.

The last festive decor we own is a little fake pine plant decorated with glitter and a gold rim at the bottom of the vase. Currently, we keep it on our coffee table on our wooden little tray.

But I must admit this plant is not that special to us, so maybe we’ll declutter it in the future, but for now, it’s staying because it looks pretty cute.

BONUS TIPS ON HOW TO DECLUTTER CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS

If you want to create a more minimalist Christmas in your home as well, here are my best tips on how to do that:

1. The best time to declutter your festive decor is when you’re putting everything in storage for next year. Holding the item in your hand asses how you feel – if it didn’t bring you joy this year, you can easily let it go.

2. If you find that setting up festive decorations is more stressful than joyful, then it means you have too much stuff. So keep letting go of items until you feel decorating becomes effortless and joyful or, if nothing else, stress-free.

3. Let go of the idea you need to decorate every room of your house. We decided only to decorate our living room because that’s where we open the gifts and celebrate Christmas day. Everything else in the house stays the same, and that’s how we prefer it.

4. Most importantly, to keep your Christmas minimal, you must pay attention to how many gifts you accept. We significantly reduced the number of gifts we receive or buy, and our family and friends all respect our choice to keep things simple. Also, my partner and I decided to give each other a gift wishlist so the other could buy something from there instead of wasting their money on something useless.
